FAQ of the Week

How can I hire good people?

There are three elements to hiring good people.

1) Know what you are looking for.
2) Be realistic.
3) Make your company enjoyable to work for AND, convey this to candidates.

Too often managers/business owners will recognize that there is a need for additional help and will go find an employee with similar attributes as themselves. The most effective managers are able to recognize their own shortcomings and find those skills in someone else.

The best way to find these skills is to build an employee profile that defines what the perfect employee looks like. The goal is to find a candidate that is as close to this profile as possible without expecting too much.

Finally and likely most influential in hiring good employees is to establish an enjoyable workplace and informing candidates of this. A positive workplace has the power to bring out the best in people and conversely, a negative workplace will bring out the worst in people. Is there any wonder why owners complain about employees shining in the interview and then not delivering once they start?
